Rakeback Deductions Are Not What They Used to Be

12/22/2011

When RakeTracker first launched in 2004, rakeback deductions were as common as the dealt rakeback formula. Now neither is the case. Most poker rooms have moved to some form of weighted contributed rakeback. Rakeback friendly poker rooms have also moved away from deducting anything from rakeback. There are now only two rooms that deduct anything from rakeback. When I say rakeback I really mean net rake. The player only loses the percent of the deduction that matches their rakeback. For example, if a poker room offers a player 30% rakeback and something gets deducted from rakeback the player only loses 30% of the deduction, not 100% of it.

PKR is the only standalone online poker room that deducts anything from player's rakeback. The Yatahay Network, which includes True Poker and Americas Cardroom, is the only network that deducts anything from rakeback. PKR deducts only bonuses from rakeback. Yatahay deducts bonuses, points spent and cash promotions such as the leaderboard from rakeback. There are also some poker rooms where rakeback players were grandfathered in after a rakeback policy change that deduct items from rakeback. Bodog/Bovada is one of these rooms, but since they no longer offer new players rakeback they do not really apply to this situation.

What Happened to all of the Rakeback Deductions?

Some poker rooms decided to stop deducting anything from players because they felt it was not player friendly. Cake Poker is one of these rooms. Affiliates still get items deducted from their commission. That is why if you log into RakeTracker to view your Cake Poker balance you may see negative numbers. Those numbers do not affect your rakeback though. To see the correct Cake Poker rakeback stats you should look in the Cake Poker software under My Account/VIP Status. Some rakeback deductions were eliminated when poker rooms moved from rakeback to VIP. All online poker VIP programs are deduction free.

The biggest change to poker rooms deducting items from rakeback came because of Black Friday. Three poker rooms are currently out of business due to Black Friday. Full Tilt Poker had some of the most outrageous rakeback deductions that you can imagine. They deducted deposit fees, bonuses, points spent in the store and tournament overlays. The Cereus Network, which consisted of Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, deducted bonuses from all players. U.S. players also had deposit fees deducted from MGR. These deposit fees were typically about 10% of a deposit that was made. Cereus announced just before Black Friday that they would also be deducting points spent in their store.

While the rake formulas keep changing, players are getting hit with fewer rakeback deductions. As more rooms move to VIP programs, this is likely to continue. If you are playing on PKR or Yatahay keep in mind that deductions can affect your rakeback. At all other poker rooms, make sure to spend your points and take full advantages of bonuses to get the full value out of your online poker experience.
