Online Poker in New Jersey Still Awaits Governor Signature

01/27/2011

Earlier this month, the New Jersey Assembly passed a pro-online poker bill that would make New Jersey the first state in the Union to offer online poker to citizens of the state. The bill passed by a 63-11-3 margin; it now awaits the signature of Governor Chris Christie. The governor is expected to sign the bill.

So what does this mean for players based in New Jersey? First of all, only Atlantic City-based cities would be allowed to operate in the state if the bill becomes law. Foreign operators, casinos in other states and existing online poker sites would not be permitted. Players outside of New Jersey would not be allowed to play on the New Jersey rooms.

For the sites currently accepting players from New Jersey: it is certainly possible, although not guaranteed, that sites such as Full Tilt or Poker Stars could leave the state of New Jersey, just as they did in Washington State after the Washington State Supreme Court upheld the state's ban on online gambling. The bill would not specifically make playing non-Atlantic City sites illegal, but that could be changed when the regulations are drafted.

For now, players will have to wait and see if the new bill is allowed to become law. We will have updates at RakeTracker with any developments.
