Department of Justice Reverses Opinion on Wire Act
12/24/2011The U.S. Department of Justice has reversed its opinion on the Wire Act. The Wire Act is one of the laws that the Department of Justice has used in their fight against online poker. The Wire Act, passed in 1961, makes transmitting sports betting across state lines a federal crime. In the past, the Department of Justice also felt that online poker was included. In an email sent to Senators Harry Reid and Jon Kyl, the Justice Department reversed that opinion. They now have the opinion that the Wire Act in fact only applies to sports betting and no other forms on interstate gambling.
This is big news to online poker players in the U.S. While this may have little effect on existing offshore operators, this means that when states legalize online poker they will be able to join poker network in other states with legal online poker. They may even be able to network with operators in other countries. Nevada just passed regulated online poker yesterday. Several other states have had serious discussions about regulating online poker in their states as well. For players in states that pass regulated online poker, this is likely to mean bigger player pools which will mean better game selection.
